Marketing migration

Migrate from Klaviyo to Shopify Messaging

Move Klaviyo profiles and consent into Shopify, then rebuild essential campaigns in Shopify Messaging with a controlled migration plan.

Discuss this project

Bring customer profiles, marketing consent and essential campaigns closer to Shopify without turning a platform change into a deliverability or compliance problem.

Shopify Messaging, formerly Shopify Email, supports email campaigns and marketing automations inside Shopify. SMS is available only for supported recipient countries and currently excludes Australia. For businesses with straightforward email marketing, moving away from Klaviyo can reduce cost and remove an integration layer between the customer record and the messages you send.

Discuss your marketing migration

Why replace Klaviyo with Shopify Messaging?

Klaviyo is a powerful platform. It is also more platform than many businesses need.

A move to Shopify Messaging can make sense when the priority is to:

  • Manage campaigns, customer segments and commerce data in Shopify.
  • Reduce the cost and operational overhead of a separate marketing platform.
  • Build straightforward welcome, newsletter and abandoned-cart automations.
  • Use Shopify customer segments as the source of audience truth.
  • Keep signup consent, checkout activity and purchase behaviour closer together.
  • Give a small team fewer systems to learn and maintain.

This is consolidation, not a claim that Shopify Messaging matches every advanced Klaviyo capability.

When Shopify Messaging is enough

The migration is usually a good fit when:

  • Most sends are newsletters, promotions and a small set of lifecycle automations.
  • Segmentation is based mainly on Shopify customer and order data.
  • The team is not using Klaviyo's deeper predictive, testing or cross-channel features.
  • Reducing recurring software cost is more valuable than preserving complex flows.
  • Marketing should be manageable from the same admin used for products and customers.

Staying on Klaviyo may be the better decision when the business depends on sophisticated behavioural segmentation, complex branching flows, extensive experimentation, a mature template library or integrations that Shopify Messaging cannot replace. A useful assessment can conclude that no migration should happen yet.

What can move into Shopify?

A controlled Klaviyo migration can include:

  • Customer profiles matched to existing Shopify customers.
  • Names, email addresses, phone numbers and useful profile attributes.
  • Email marketing consent, plus SMS consent when source evidence and destination support are both in scope.
  • Tags or metafields that preserve meaningful source context.
  • Important list and segment membership translated into Shopify segments or snapshot tags.
  • Newsletter and campaign signup forms connected directly to Shopify customers.
  • Sender-domain and deliverability setup.
  • Core campaigns and automations rebuilt in Shopify Messaging.
  • Testing for subscription, unsubscribe and suppression behaviour.

The useful destination is a clean Shopify customer model that Shopify Messaging can use, not a permanent copy of every historical Klaviyo property.

Consent is the migration, not a checkbox

Marketing status needs explicit treatment when Klaviyo, WooCommerce and Shopify disagree.

I reconcile duplicate email and phone identities, merge only approved records, and preserve the most restrictive consent state when sources conflict. Unsubscribed and suppressed contacts are not silently converted into subscribers because another system contains an older opt-in value.

This protects customers, sender reputation and the integrity of the new audience. It also gives the business a clear record of how each destination status was decided.

Legal requirements vary by location and business model, so technical migration controls are not a replacement for legal advice.

Campaigns and flows need to be rebuilt

Klaviyo flows, templates and historical reporting do not move into Shopify Messaging as a perfect one-to-one import.

Before rebuilding anything, I identify which campaigns and automations still produce value. Essential journeys are recreated against Shopify's current customer, order and product data. Old experiments, inactive flows and brittle segments can be retired instead of carrying unnecessary complexity into the new platform.

Typical priorities include:

  • Welcome and signup messaging.
  • Newsletter and promotional templates.
  • Abandoned-cart communication.
  • Post-purchase education or replenishment reminders.
  • Win-back campaigns where the available Shopify data supports them.

Each automation is tested with real trigger and suppression conditions before the old platform is switched off.

Controls proven in a completed customer migration

I have applied this approach while reconciling Klaviyo profiles with WooCommerce customers and historical order addresses. Duplicate and shared identities were resolved through explicit merchant-approved rules before verified records were written to Shopify.

The final verification reported:

  • No remaining customer creates.
  • No unresolved identifier conflicts.
  • No records missing their migration fingerprint or verification state.
  • Email consent separated into subscribed, unsubscribed and not-subscribed states rather than reduced to a single marketing list.

That verification matters more than claiming every exported contact was imported.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Messaging the same as Shopify Email?

Shopify Messaging is the current name for the product formerly known as Shopify Email. It supports email campaigns and marketing automations within the Shopify admin. SMS campaigns are limited to Shopify's supported recipient countries; Australian recipients currently require another SMS provider.

Can Klaviyo contacts be imported into Shopify?

Yes. Customer details and consent can be moved into Shopify, but duplicate identities and conflicting subscription states need to be resolved before import. A raw CSV overwrite can skip duplicates or replace useful customer data.

Do Klaviyo flows transfer automatically?

No. The important automations should be reviewed and rebuilt for Shopify Messaging. This is also a chance to remove inactive flows and simplify the campaign structure.

Will Klaviyo analytics move to Shopify Messaging?

Historical platform reporting generally remains historical. Export or retain the reports the business needs before closing Klaviyo, and define a new measurement baseline in Shopify.

Can I keep Klaviyo while testing Shopify Messaging?

Yes, but sending overlap must be controlled. Audiences, signup sources and automations should have clear ownership so customers do not receive duplicated or contradictory messages.

Simplify the stack without damaging the audience

If Klaviyo has become more complex or expensive than your marketing needs justify, I can assess what you use today, move the right customer data into Shopify and rebuild the essential work in Shopify Messaging.
